The East Side Union High School District’s Thomas P. Ryan Hall of Fame was established in the early 1970s to publicize and honor the outstanding achievement of graduates of East Side Union High Schools. It serves to reinforce respect for excellence and an expression of admiration for East Side Union High School alumni who have achieved notable success in the fields of public service, arts, science, athletics, business, the professions and education.
Nearly 100 East Side graduates have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, among them Jerry Yang (Founder of Yahoo), Jim Plunkett (NFL Quarterback), Len Ramirez (News Reporter) Luis Valdez (Playwright/Screenwriter), Khaled Hosseini (author), Millard Hampton (Gold and Silver Olympic Medalist), Viet Pham (Celebrity Chef & Restaurateur), U.S. Congressman Mike Honda, California State Assemblymember Nora Campos, and San Jose City Councilmember Ash Kalra.
“There are so many successful East Side graduates in leadership roles throughout the country, and too often, their stories go untold,” said ESUHSDEF President Ed Buller. “We have graduates in all areas – political, community, health, business, sports – it’s amazing and gratifying. The Foundation’s goal is to make sure more of their stories are recognized.”
The Hall of Fame Class of 2015 was formally inducted at a special celebration on November 21, 2015, at the Dolce Hayes Mansion in San José. The Foundation sponsors this event semi-annually to honor the legacy of the district’s alumni.
